I've documented some of the steps below for anyone interested, but I can't find anything that changes the outcome. Compatability mode and giving admin privlages doesn't fix errors. I've windows 10 running a high performance and bloody expensive gaming machine. On refunds: I believe that if you play the game for two hours and it no longer works, they should not only refund the game price, they should also pay you for the two hours of your time they wasted.
I have no problem running at other resolutions like 1920x1080, 1920x1200, but haven't tried 1768x992 again, as I fear running in to that infinite loop again! I quit RegEdit and ran the game, and it now works! It looks like changing ScreenResolution Width and Height to the monitor's native values fixed the problem. I continued searching the registry for "deadpool", and after many more hits, found another entry \Software\Activision\DeadPool that was identical to the above one, except it did have the correct values of 2560x1600. So I changed it to my monitor's native 2560x1600. That resolution of 1768x992 struck me as odd, I've never seen it before. ScreenResolution_REG_SZ_Width:1768 Height:992 Fullscreen:1 After a few hits I found an entry that read: I ran RegEdit and searched for "deadpool". Then I got an idea from another post on the board titled "The Steam servers are too busy to process your request". Steam's Game Files Integrity Check ran through without any error messages.
Also interesting is that the DP.exe icon is still TexMod's icon, yet if I right-click DP.exe and select properties, it shows the correct DP icon! STEAMSTART files appearing in Deadpool's bin folder.
And at startup, Steam has always said it was installing the VCredist package, even when the game was running fine. Now it just aborts after a black screen, every time. Then I uninstalled Deadpool, and downloaded it again. At one point it was doing the infinite loop thing. (It's also possible my fingers may have accidentally hit some keys and also changed screen resolution.) Ever since then I have had the problems mentioned above. Then one time the display went buggy when I changed Graphics quality in-game from High to Medium. It worked, with textures being replaced as expected. Thus, Steam would launch TexMod, which would then launch Deadpool. I had to rename TexMod.exe to DP.exe, and rename the original DP.exe to another name. I had Deadpool running beautifully on Win10, and even completed the game.
